The Craftsman

My journey in woodworking began with traditional furniture making. For many years, I focused on building tables, cabinets, and other pieces of furniture, enjoying the process of shaping raw lumber into functional objects meant to last for generations.

About three years ago, I purchased my first lathe, a mid-sized Jet lathe, simply as a way to make knobs, legs, and other round components for my furniture projects. What began as a tool to support my furniture making quickly became a new passion of its own.

I discovered that woodturning offered a unique combination of creativity, precision, and spontaneity. Unlike working from a set plan, turning allows the character of the wood to help guide the design. I found a new appreciation for the grain, figure, and natural variations that make every piece of wood unique, and I have since devoted much of my time to creating handcrafted bowls, vessels, and other turned pieces.

I moved to Maine after 35 years as a Geology Professor in Indiana. In Maine, I found a place that nurtured my love of natural materials, craftsmanship, and making things by hand. Argast Woodworks is the continuation of that journey; creating functional and beautiful pieces that celebrate nature itself.
